The intersection between digital platforms and copyright law continues to raise complex legal questions for creators and rights holders in Nigeria. The recent copyright dispute involving Bimbo Ademoye and the demonetisation of her film on YouTube provides a practical case study on how copyright claims, online enforcement systems, and domestic intellectual property law interact in real time.
In this article, we examine the circumstances surrounding the dispute and analyse the relevant provisions of the Nigerian Copyright Act 2022, with particular attention to audiovisual works, music licensing, online notice and takedown procedures, and the legal consequences of false copyright claims.
